Shannon County Museum Celebrates Akers Community

On Sunday, May 22, a community gathering was held at Akers. Visitors and former members of the Akers community celebrated Shannon County history. Participants enjoyed a potluck lunch at Akers Community Cemetery, a visit to historic Mt. Zion church, and a float trip on Current River starting at Welch Cave Spring, stopping at the Howell and Maggard farms, a walking tour of Akers including the history of the ferry, business, and Mount Zion church, a picnic supper, and music by local musicians. A walk around Akers included what it was like to live there 50 years ago.

The celebration was jointly sponsored by the Shannon County Museum, Ozark National Scenic Riverways, and Akers Ferry Canoe Rental.
