Summersville School Bells Ring August 20

School children are eager to get to school August 20.  Enrollment is up at the Summersville Elementary School with 206 students. The high school has 165, down from last year.

Elementary Welcomes Floyd

Each new year brings new teachers to a school system and Summersville Elementary welcomes two new teachers, Amanda Floyd and Heather Wuertley, and a new principal. Mary Holder.

Amanda Floyd is the new 5th and 6th Science and 5th Novels, AR and Social Studies teacher at Summersville Elementary.

Amanda and her husband, Jake, reside in Licking. He works for Intercounty Electric. They have a six month old daughter, Addison.

This is Amanda’s first year of teaching. She currently is doing student teaching as well as teaching students full time. That’s a double job. She has always wanted to be a teacher. "I like kids. That is all I ever wanted to do", stated Floyd.

Amanda feels the biggest asset that Summersville Elementary has going is that everyone is so helpful and friendly. She hopes to train students to comprehend GLE’s and use those resources during annual MAP testing in the spring.

Floyd is a graduate of Licking High School, and holds an Associate Degree from College of North Arkansas in Harrison, where she played basketball for two years, earning the honor of All-American for both years and competing in a national tournament. She will complete her education from SBU in Mountain View in December.

"What I see here I really like. The parents are very supportive. All but six of my students came to open house. It is a close knit community, much like Licking, and I feel very welcome here," stated Floyd. Amanda wants to be an example to her students. She is looking forward to the time when students can conduct experiments because of the hands-on factor and the reactions when those experiments actually work are exciting.

The hardest thing Amanda has encountered is the last minute hiring. She was hired just before school started and did not have much time to prepare for class time. However, Amanda states, "I am here to see the students succeed, all of them. That is my goal."

Stop by to welcome Amanda Floyd to Summersville Schools.
